Bonkers article in the TGO magazine
“These days I wouldn’t be allowed to lead a party of 11-year olds along a path in Derbyshire” is a quote from an ex-teacher in an article in this months The Great Outdoors magazine.
The self-promoting article cites problems with bureaucracy and health and safety as the reasons that this chap now runs expeditions for youngsters overseas.
Now this may be all well and good, but his statement is patently untrue – an observation of many a popular path in Dovedale, Castleton or Eyam will confirm the presence of children being introduced to the outdoors by dedicated teachers, youth workers , scout leaders etc – and all credit to them!
I know there are lots of complaints about increasing paperwork, risk assessments and rules and regulations in outdoor education but let us not dismiss the tremendous efforts of all the adults who are proving that it can still be done.
The editors of TGO really ought to get a grip of what they are publishing and ask whether it is responsible. This article follows hot on the heels of the “strap crampons to your sandals for winter mountaineering” article (I exaggerate, but not much!). It is rapidly becoming a tabloid style outdoor magazine.
