Spring Bank Holiday Well Dressing in the Peak District 2007
May Spring Bank holiday week from 26th May onwards is a popular time for Peak district villages to show off their well dressings. This traditional craft is only found around Derbyshire and it's borders and dates back to Pagan times. Local people decorate wells and springs with elaborate pictures constructed outof local flowersand plants.
Why not tie in your bank holiday walk with a visit to one of these well dressings. Walk suggestions are included alongside the events.
Well dressing at Endon (small charge). See the results of this traditional Peak District craft at the village in the Staffordshire Moorlands. Beautiful walks in the area.
Well-dressing at Middleton by Youlgeave. This village is close to walks in the wonderful Lathkill Dale, a fine limestone valley.
Monyash well dressing also has three wells to look at. This pretty village sits at the northern end of Lathkill Dale and would link well with a visit to the Middleton by Youlgreave well dressings.
Well –dressing at Wirksworth. Good walks on the High Peak Trail at Black Rocks or High Peak Junction are nearby.
