75th Anniversary of the Mass Trespass on Kinder Scout - UpdatedApril 24th marks the 75th anniversary of the mass trespass on Kinder Scout, probably the most important historical event in establishing our right to roam over open countryside. On 24th April 1932, members of the British Workers’ Sport Federation organised a Mass Trespass on Kinder Scout to express their anger and frustration at being turned off the grouse moors by gamekeepers. 400 protestors scuffled with the Duke of Devonshire’s gamekeepers at William Clough on the way up to Kinder. Undeterred the walkers reached the summit of Kinder Scout. Five protesters, including trespass leader Benny Rothman were subsequently imprisoned for their part in the protest. This triggered a wave of public sympathy with more mass protests following, which paved the way for later rights of access. Take a couple of minutes next time you are out on the hills to contemplate the progress to free access to the countryside that has been made. Official events are being organised to commemorate the Kinder Trespass, for those who like that sort of thing. - walks and tree plantings organised by the National Trust - exhibitions and events at New Mills Town Hall - the naming of a Northern Rail locomotive "Benny Rothman - Manchester Rambler" at Piccadily Station They are also laying on buses to ensure the event uses sustainable transport. a href="http://kindertrespass.com/index.asp">Event details here |
