Peak District Moorland Fires - 2007 outbreaks have already started
I was on the north side of Kinder Scout last Sunday, 8th April when I saw a moorland fire break out across the Snake Pass in the Alport Valley. I managed to get a signal on the Kinder plateau and call 999.
Apparently firefighters from Chapel-en le frith, Hathersage, Bradwell, Glossop, South Yorkshire and Hathersage attendedand used portable pump to douse the fire. It took several hours before the fire was put out and sparks caused a secondary fire.

400 square metres of moorland were damaged. Fire chiefs blamed a camp fire so this is a timely reminder to be extra careful when we are out walking not to inadvertently cause a fire. The risk will be high this weekend with the Peak District weather forecast promising soaring temperatures.
The moors are exceptionally dry for April with not an April shower in sight. If the weather does not change, more fires and subsequent more closures will become inevitable.
Take care and enjoy the summer weekend.
