Café review – Outside café at Calver crossroards (on the A623)

I visited this café last Saturday morning after a five mile fell run before breakfast. As you can imagine, I was ravenous and the food didn’t disappoint.

I plumped for the full breakfast which cost £3.75. This was quite enough for me but there is a larger version for £4.75. The food was hot ,wholesome tasty and hit the mark. The sausages could have been better as I got the impression that they had been stood a while and the black pudding was disappointing. The bacon and eggs were excellent. I would have preferred toast to the bread and butter served.

The rest of the menu offers a variety of the usual hearty stuff for outdoor folks – chip butties, sausage sandwiches, Chilli-con-carne and the like.

The café has a good ambience with a mixture of ramblers, cyclists and passing motorists. The staff are young, laid back and friendly. It is an excellent place to while away an hour whilst you wait for the rain to stop. The tea comes in pint mugs and the latest outdoor magazines are available to read.

The café is of course attached to the Outside gear shop which has a good range of stuff to browse at.

The café is handy a handy stopping off place if you are travelling to walks on Curbar or Frogatt Edges, Baslow or Chatsworth. With unpretentious surroundings and good well cooked food, I shall be visiting again soon.
